Color Your Room

Color therapy has been practised in different cultures worldwide for over 2,000 years.

Through my writing I attempt to convey how it is possible to harness color to both communicate our feelings and to look into the myriad of ways we can use color to bring about a change in our emotions.

Color therapy is something I’ve been fascinated by for quite a while now. Color impacts our lives on a day to day basis, and there have been a number of studies looking at our relationship with color and specifically how different colors impact us in a unique way.

When using color in designing rooms within our homes we have to think carefully about the mood we wish to create in each room. It would be overwhelming to have a single room painted, and contain furniture and accessories in just one color. We are better off to focus on one base color in any specific room and then use complementary colors to enhance the mood we are trying to create. This will not only make the room more pleasing to the eye, but will allow some very positive additional effects to take place too.

For example, if you have trouble sleeping or relaxing, take note of the key colors in your bedroom. If your bedroom is decorated in bright yellows or reds, the effect might be too stimulating for your mind, as you fall asleep, and as a result your sleep might not be the best it can be. A Room in hues of cool blues or greens will have a calming effect that helps to relax you and can create a sense of there being more space, perhaps giving a feeling of being in the open air.

Yellow is a very popular color used in kitchens. It reminds us of the sun and growth, and stimulates the sense of taste and smell, be it a rich, vibrant or a fresh, citrus yellow. Using bright red, orange or yellow dishes could increase the flavours of the food you eat. If you’re experiencing a lack of appetite, look at the colors that surround you at mealtimes. This could be a factor.

Green is a great color to use in any room where concentration is needed. It is said to improve efficiency and focus, and people who work in offices that are decorated in greens are said to have higher rates of job satisfaction. Surround yourself with greens if you would like to focus and gain some clarity.

Considering our color choices when we come to decorate rooms of our homes can affect our day to day lives. A splash of paint can make a difference on a number of levels to those we live with and of course our children can experience great benefits from the choices we make too.
