As a parent, seeing my own children grow is a fascinating experience. I often feel that I learn more about life from them than they do from me! Their insightful, innocent views open my eyes and fill me with wonder.
It is easy for us as adults, in today’s society, to see just how much color influences our lives. Through my children’s eyes however, I am always fascinated by the effect that color has when used in marketing, encouraging us to feel certain feelings through the power of color.
Growing up in the 21st century
Growing up in the 21st century, all children, not just mine, are constantly surrounded by advertising in the many forms it takes in today’s media. Therefore, having their own personal space to breathe and reflect, is more important now than ever. At home, we frequently talk about colors and my children are open to seeing the beauty of color and how it influences us day to day. Naturally they inspired me to write about Eden and Ethan.
My family and I are so fortunate to live in one of the greenest cities in the world, and therefore getting out into open spaces is easy for us to do. I feel it’s important for them to be able to recharge and relax and what better place to do so, than in nature. Being amongst the healing greens outdoors, or by the soothing blue of the sea gives us all a healthy boost.
Focus on a color
Now my children are growing, they don’t need my direction quite so much. In fact, they have become aware of the colors of their surroundings and seem to naturally get in tune with them if they’re of a positive nature. In addition, I can see them using color to attempt to change negative emotions. Using their own color super powers, they have begun to harness color to improve their own mental and emotional states when they aren’t able to change their environment. There have been times at home and school when they’ve managed to take a moment, to close their eyes and simply focus on a color that helps them. It doesn’t take them long but I can notice the change they undergo almost immediately.
Color therapy
The great thing about color therapy is that it’s easily accessible for children, and the earlier they start the better. Imagine the amount of time small children spend with crayons or pencils or paints in their hands! With more of an understanding of color, not only can they express themselves but, as a mom, I have a clearer understanding of their moods and this enables me to be a better parent.
